Disney Cruise…with no kids?

Let’s face it. Disney is synonymous with children. After multiple Disney cruise sailings with our children, my husband and I we decided to try a Disney cruise without our kids and it was amazing. Adult only pools and restaurants onboard, that were quite full throughout the voyage, allowed us to feel like grownups and not miss our kids.

Pre-COVID, we sailed on the Disney Fantasy on a Western Caribbean itinerary with stops in Castaway Cay (Disney’s private island), Grand Cayman, Falmouth, and Cozumel. Castaway Cay has a self contained adults only section that makes you forget there are children on the cruise. The beach was quiet with service that only Disney can deliver. Waiters were attentive to the beach and the afternoon barbecue was delicious. Of course, beach time was after we did the 5K which is early morning at Castaway Cay. You have the option to walk or run the 5K. I did a little of both! Participants in the 5K are the first off the ship upon arrival and we were back on the ship to shower and change for the beach after the race with plenty of time to relax on the beach.

And yes I got a medal!

After the adult beach, my favorite part of Castaway Cay was riding bicycles around the island. The bikes are cruisers, so nothing strenuous, but a great way to see the entire island. You can rent the bikes once on Castaway Cay, near the shoppes. The paths are paved and take you to very quiet, remote areas of the island. A must do before you head back to the ship.

Next stop was Grand Cayman which was recently added back to the Disney Western Caribbean itinerary. We took the bike tour offered through Disney and it did not disappoint. Books were okay, yes just okay, but enough for every activity level. Sites were good but the fun part of the tour? We rode on the streets of the island and if you have never been, the iguanas and lizards are indigenous to the island and they had no problem jumping out from trash cans and fences along the ride! I can laugh about it now but while I was riding, it was not so funny.

Some of the residents.

First stop on the bike tour was Hell, which was fascinating.

Hell, Grand Cayman, named for the jagged, black limestone in the area.

Next stop was The Cayman Turtle Center. We were able to hold the newest editions, born at the center.

The cruise also made stops in Falmouth and Cozumel which were good and always interesting if you have never been.

Cruising on Disney sans kids was a fun time made even better because our cruise was a Star Wars theme. While both of my dogs have been named for Star Wars characters, I had no idea of the magnitude that people will go in order to show their love for Star Wars. The costumes were extremely well done and I just kept wondering, how did you get that in your luggage?

A great time without kids, on a Disney Cruise. Amazing!
